IUL for Truck Drivers

Indexed universal life (IUL) is permanent life insurance with a cash value that earns interest based on a stock market index, with a cap on the upside and a floor on index losses. For a truck driver it can fit if you want coverage for life and can pay more than the minimum, steadily, for many years. It is usually not the right first policy if your budget is tight or your income swings a lot. There is no special IUL for CDL holders. It is the same product everyone buys, and the questions below matter more than the label.

How an IUL works, step by step

  1. You pay a premium. Within limits you choose how much and how often. That flexibility is the main selling point and also the main risk.
  2. The carrier takes out charges every month. These include the cost of insurance, which rises as you get older, plus policy fees and the cost of any riders you add.
  3. What is left goes to the cash value. The carrier credits interest based on how an index such as the S&P 500 moved. Your money is not invested in the market directly.
  4. The credit has limits. A cap limits how much you can be credited in a good year. A participation rate can limit it further. A floor, often 0 percent, stops the credit from going negative in a bad year. The carrier can usually change the cap and participation rate over time.
  5. You can use the cash value. You can borrow against it or withdraw from it. Loans charge interest and reduce the death benefit until repaid.
  6. The policy stays in force while the cash value covers the charges. If it runs dry, you have to pay more or the policy lapses and the coverage ends.

IUL is life insurance first. It is not an investment account or a retirement plan, and any illustration of future cash value is not a guarantee. The National Association of Insurance Commissioners publishes consumer guides on life insurance and on how policy illustrations work.

What the floor really protects, and what it does not

You will hear that an IUL "has a 0 percent floor." That is true for the index credit. It does not mean the cash value never goes down. The monthly charges come out no matter what the index does, so in a year where the credit is zero, the cash value shrinks by the amount of the charges. Early in the policy there are also surrender charges, often for 10 years or more, so canceling early can return less than you paid in.

Why IUL is different for a truck driver

Questions to ask before you buy an IUL

  1. What does the guaranteed column of the illustration show, not just the illustrated one?
  2. What happens to the policy if the index credits average 2 points lower than illustrated?
  3. How many years do surrender charges last, and how much would I get back if I canceled in year 3?
  4. What premium keeps the policy in force to age 100 or later, and what if I pay less?
  5. Can the carrier lower the cap or participation rate after I buy?
  6. If I stop paying for 6 months, does the policy stay in force?
  7. How much of my first year's premium goes to charges and commission?

A good agent will answer every one of these plainly and show you the numbers. If you only see the best case, ask for the rest.

Taxes, in plain words

Under current federal law, the death benefit paid to your beneficiaries is generally not subject to federal income tax, and cash value growth is tax deferred while it stays in the policy. Loans are generally not taxed while the policy stays in force. If a policy lapses with a loan outstanding, or if it is funded so heavily that it becomes a modified endowment contract, taxes can apply. Tax rules change and every situation is different, so talk to a tax professional about yours.

Questions drivers ask

Is IUL a good idea for truck drivers?

It can be for a driver who wants life insurance that lasts for life, has steady income, and can pay more than the minimum premium for many years. It is usually a poor fit if money is tight, if your income swings and you may stop paying, or if you mainly need the most coverage for the lowest price. In that case term life is usually the better tool.

Can I lose money in an IUL?

Yes, the cash value can go down. The floor only stops the index credit from going below zero. Policy charges such as the cost of insurance still come out every month, so in a year with a zero credit the cash value can drop. Surrender charges in the early years can also mean you get back less than you paid in if you cancel.

Is there a special IUL for CDL drivers?

No. Plans marketed as CDL IUL or trucker IUL are the same indexed universal life policies sold to everyone else. What changes for a driver is the health questions, the driving record check, and whether the premium fits income that can change from month to month.

What happens if I stop paying my IUL premium?

The policy keeps running only as long as the cash value can cover the monthly charges. If you skip payments for a long time, or the cash value is low, the policy can lapse and the coverage ends. Ask for an illustration that shows what happens if you pay less or stop for a period.

Can I borrow from my IUL?

Most IUL policies let you take a loan against the cash value. The loan charges interest, and any unpaid loan is subtracted from the death benefit. A large loan can cause the policy to lapse, and a lapse with a loan outstanding can create a tax bill.

Is IUL better than term life for truckers?

They do different jobs. Term covers you for a set number of years at the lowest price and has no cash value. IUL is meant to last for life and builds cash value, but costs much more for the same death benefit. Many drivers who need large coverage for a family start with term.
