CDL IUL

A CDL IUL is an indexed universal life insurance policy marketed to commercial drivers. It is permanent life insurance with a cash value that is credited based on a stock market index, with a cap on the upside and a floor on index losses. There is no special IUL only for CDL holders. If you saw a CDL IUL ad, the policy behind it can be a good fit for a driver with steady income who wants coverage for life, and a poor fit for a driver whose pay swings or whose budget is tight. The questions below tell you which one you are.

What CDL IUL ads say, and what the policy really does

What the ad saysWhat it means in the policy
"Open your account in minutes"You are applying for a life insurance policy. It has health questions, a driving record check and monthly policy charges.
"Grow with the market"Your money is not in the market. The carrier credits interest based on how an index moved, up to a cap the carrier can change.
"Your money is protected when the market drops"The floor stops the index credit from going below zero. The monthly charges still come out, so the cash value can go down in a flat year.
"Retire without paying taxes"Under current law, policy loans are generally not taxed while the policy stays in force. If it lapses with a loan, a tax bill can follow.
"Only a few dollars a day"The minimum premium may not keep the policy running for life. Ask what it takes to reach age 100.

An IUL is life insurance first. Any illustration of future cash value is an example, not a promise. The National Association of Insurance Commissioners publishes consumer guides on life insurance and policy illustrations.

Is a CDL IUL right for you?

Usually a better fitUsually a poor fit
You want coverage that lasts for life, not just while the kids are homeYou mainly need the most coverage for the lowest price. Term life does that
Your income is steady and you can pay more than the minimum for many yearsYour pay swings a lot by the mile or the load and you might stop paying
You already have an emergency fund and take your 401(k) matchYou have high interest debt or no savings for a slow month
You are younger, so the cash value has time to buildYou are starting late and mostly want money for final expenses

What happens to a CDL IUL if your driving career changes

Five questions to ask before you sign a CDL IUL

  1. Show me the guaranteed column of the illustration, not just the illustrated one.
  2. What happens if the index credits come in 2 points lower than this illustration every year?
  3. What premium keeps this policy in force to age 100, and what if I pay less?
  4. How long do surrender charges last, and what do I get back if I cancel in year 3?
  5. How much of my first year's premium goes to charges and commission?

A good agent answers all five plainly and shows you the numbers. If you only see the best case, ask for the rest. For how caps, floors and loans work in detail, see our IUL for truck drivers guide. For everything else a CDL holder should know before applying, see CDL life insurance.

Questions drivers ask

What is a CDL IUL?

CDL IUL is a marketing name for an indexed universal life insurance policy sold to commercial drivers. It is permanent life insurance with a cash value credited based on a stock market index. There is no IUL made only for CDL holders, and the policy works the same as one sold to anyone else.

Is CDL IUL a scam?

IUL itself is a real, state regulated life insurance product. Problems come from how it is sold, such as ads that only show the best case, or a premium that is too low to keep the policy running. A fair agent shows you the guaranteed numbers, a low rate scenario and the surrender charges before you sign.

How much does a CDL IUL cost per month?

It depends on your age, health, tobacco use, the death benefit and how much you choose to put in. The minimum premium can be low, but a policy funded at the minimum may not last. Ask for the premium that keeps the policy in force to age 100 or later, shown on the guaranteed basis.

Can I get a CDL IUL with no medical exam?

Some carriers decide smaller IUL policies with no medical exam, using your health answers and database checks. Whether you qualify, and the price, depends on your health answers. Larger amounts often need a short exam.

Is a CDL IUL better than my company 401(k)?

They do different jobs. An IUL is life insurance first. If your fleet matches 401(k) contributions, taking the full match usually comes before putting extra money into any life insurance policy. Talk to a financial or tax professional about your own situation.

Is CDL IUL different from trucker IUL?

No. CDL IUL, trucker IUL and IUL for truck drivers are names for the same kind of policy. Our IUL for truck drivers guide explains caps, floors and policy charges step by step.
